Producer’s Statement

The web movie project Between Yesterday and Tomorrow started in March 2011, two weeks after the Tōhoku earthquake. I asked filmmakers I knew to create five-minute films based on a set of “instructions” and arranged and posted the completed products online. In the end 30 people participated and I could include 60 or more works. Afterwards, I had the opportunity to present the omnibus film I compiled from these works at festivals both inside and outside of Japan, starting with the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival.
In 2016, five years after the Tōhoku earthquake, the thought came to me to create a new omnibus film, requesting its component films be made according to the same instructions as the time before. Originally, following these instructions will give rise to films with a three-day basic structure. However, I anticipated that if this series made with the motif of stratified time could be edited into an omnibus in which that five-year span took on the connotations of “tomorrow,” it would lead to unforeseen expansion.
After trial and error while repeatedly watching the films submitted by the fours directors, I settled on the simple structure of putting the eight films – four from 2011 and four from 2016 – in chronological order. By all means, please try and feel the layers of time spun into existence by each director. These movies may stimulate your memory and bring to the surface things that have been stored away in the depths of your heart.
